Listening through EDPUZZLE

 Hi everyone!

In this post I will show you how I have used Edpuzzle to edit an authentic video and use it with a group of 3rd of Compulsory Secondary Education.

The topic that we were working in class is: LAST YEAR TRIP,  so that, at the end of the project, the student had create a TRAVEL PLAN suggestion for their last year at school trip.

WHY DID I CHOOSE THIS VIDEO?

On that purpose, before the listening, in class, we were working on modal verbs, so, the aim of this listening was not only developing their oral comprehension competence, but also to practice on the use of modal verbs. And, as you can see, the girl in the video uses modal verbs to give tips to travel with little money.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The aim of this listening task is to:

  • Develop  and improve their listening skill
  • Listening to authentic materials related to travelling
  • Develop their writing skill by taking notes about the video
  • Working cooperatively
  • Reviewing modal verbs
  • Reviewing Travelling vocabulary

SEQUENCE

  • Pre-listening
To begin with the task, I showed this image in the whiteboard, so students had to tell me what it could be about.

During Listening
At this step, I divided the video into two different parts:

  • First part: We worked on this part of the video by doing the Edpuzzle all together in the classroom. By means of this video we were reviewing vocabulary related to travelling, we raised awareness on the topic "Travelling with little money" and it invited students to think about some ideas.

  • Second part: Flipped Classroom: As this part of the video is about tips for travelling with little money, and there are 8 tips, I divided it into two halves. Therefore, I also divided the class into two groups. And each group had to listen one half.

Task: Watch the video-questionaire, and take notes about tips on "travelling with little money".

        Post - Listening
      • First Task: I divided the class into groups of 4 people in which there were people from one half and the other one.  And taking into account the time limit, they had to share their partners the ideas they got from the video they saw and created a mind map using modal verbs such as: should, can, must, etc.
      • Second Task: As a cooperative group, students choose a speaker and he/she had to share their ideas.

HOW DID I USE FLIPPED CLASSROOM

I divided the video into three parts, so that, I used the first part to introduce them to the task in the classroom, so that all together could think about the content of the video and debate. However, the other two parts of the video were created to divide the class into two groups, so that they would have to watch the video at home and take notes to share them in class the following day. In that way, they would use their new knowledge cooperatively to create something new.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • I liked the way I connected the different language skills, which, at the beginning was just a listening.
    • Students loved working cooperatively in this listening task, as this skill is difficult for many of them.

    DRAWBACKS

There were some students who did not do the task at home, so they were not able to share any ideas. As a consequence, some groups did not have every tip in their mind map.
